Sen. Padden appeared recently on a pair of national broadcasts aired on public radio networks, recounting the story of his 1976 Electoral College vote. Padden, a Republican elector from Washington’s 5th Congressional District, cast his ballot for Ronald Reagan, rather than Gerald Ford, who carried the state — one of the few cases in recent times in which an elector has voted for someone other than a party nominee.
